April 2020

“Sea and Sky” is a collection of 20 paintings exhibited in the spring of 2020 at Anne Hunter Galleries, at 25 Central Square in Seaside, Florida. The two-month exhibit was interrupted by community lockdown after only 2 weeks, a precaution against rapid spread of the Novel Coronavirus COVID-19.

While nothing can replace the experience of seeing art in person, it is my hope that this virtual gallery brings some sunlight and joy to you from the safety of your home during this pandemic of 2020. I invite you to peruse the works in “Sea and Sky” in the slideshow below. You can see to-scale images of the works further down on this page, as well as access high-res copies of the works. I will also be recording the live demonstrations that I had planned for the gallery, so make sure to follow me on Facebook to keep updated on these recorded events.

This series was painted over the course of the year 2019, inspired by the Gulf of Mexico and surrounding estuaries near my home in Northwest Florida, capturing what I think are universal qualities of the sea and the sky. When I begin a series, I never know where it will take me. What starts out as pictorial realism may grow into non-representational abstraction — what will seem to me to be a logical progression will most certainly represent a leap in creativity when I look back on the year. I focused on the similarity of shapes between clouds and sea spray, so similar they sometimes are interchangeable. A few of the paintings evolved into commonly recognized iconic imagery, and others explored abstract spatial relationships in the process of creating highly representational works.

My goal for 2019 was to paint 30 or 40 larger paintings of clouds and/or waves. Both intrigue me and call to me, two forms of the same matter, constantly in motion, both capable of transporting such massive energy, or such tranquility and peace. Read more
